Over the past six months, I’ve been reading an average of 1-2 books each week, which I was really proud of! But all of a sudden, my reading habits have completely changed, and guess what? I’m even happier now.

So, as a lot of you know, lately I’ve been working through my massive TBR, and I even eventually reached the end of it, which was a massive achievement. I was so relaxed when I had finally read every single book that I had been hoarding for years, and so excited when I realised that finishing my TBR meant that I could buy even more books!

While I was working through my TBR, my reading speed completely changed, and I was reading even more than ever before. I could easily read two books every week, when I was used to maybe finishing a book within a week-ish, sometimes slightly longer.

I’m a big believer in reading at whatever speed you’re comfortable at, and that not everyone will be the same. A lot of people can read a lot faster than me, and plenty of people read slower. Everyone has their own speed.

But one thing I discovered when I was reading two books a week was that I ended up skimming a lot. Towards the end of my TBR, I began to feel that I was reading for the sake of reading, not to enjoy a book. And for me, that’s really unusual.

I began to stop enjoying reading books, and although I was excited to finish my TBR and start buying new books again, I had moments when I just felt like a break from reading.

Over the past month, my reading has slowed down dramatically, where a book now lasts me around two weeks. Which is a miracle on my bank account!

And I’m loving it. I’m focusing more on books and I’m leaving time between reading them to actually think about what happens. Yes, I love reading through loads of different stories, but I think now I’d rather read them at my own pace than feel pressured to have them finished by a certain time just so a blog post can be written.

How long does it take you to read a book?

  1. Most books generally take me about 2 weeks to read, what with everything going on in my life and the fact that I’m just a really slow reader. It doesn’t really bother me any more – I’ve just started my sixth book of the year and I’m pleased I’ve read that many so far this year. Great post, thanks for sharing.

  2. I recently figured out that, to me, it really depends on the genre. I FLY through romance books and, normally, really enjoy them. But then I read fantasy and my reading pace slowers, probably because world building is harder to follow and I need to take my time to enjoy it.

  3. When I have the time to read, I read very quickly so I can finish a book in just a few hours. However, sometimes life gets pretty busy and I dislike having to stop reading partway through a book so I will sometimes start again if I get disturbed too often! lol

  4. Great post! My reading speed definitely depends on the book I’m reading. It usually takes me 2-3 days to read a book if I have time to read it. But I also have weeks where I don’t read at all. I try not to feel the pressure of reading though.
